The hallway is crowded, and Rue feels tiny and alone compared to all the sophmores and juniors. Prim hadn’t arrived yet, and Rue assumed she wouldn’t get there until after first period. “You lost, babydoll?” A gentle voice says, and Rue whips around to find a boy with dark hair smiling at her.
"Ah- yeah." The boy laughs. "Do you, by any chance, happen to know how to find and open a locker?"
"Yeah. C’mon-" The boy says, glancing at her schedule. "Rue Hailop. Your locker is right by mine." The small girl nods and picks up her backpack, walking next to the kind stranger. "Oh; I’m Marvel, by the way." Rue nods, and notices suddenly how tall Marvel is. He towered over her, stricking her with fear. Marvel laughs again. "Don’t worry." He says. "I’m not gonna kill you just yet." Rue smiles a bit they continue down the hallway.
"How’s life on the dark side?" Rue blurts, turning towards her long term crush.
"Peachy keen, jellybean." Rory smiles brightly at the African-American girl. "Join us. We have cookies." Rue smiles and shrugs.
"In the name of cookies…" She jokes, scooting closer the tanned boy.
"Now that you’re here, I should warn you that there are no cookies." But Rue supposed she was okay with that.

“You’re like my little sister, so if the Mellark boy knows what’s good for him, he’ll treat you right.”
"Annie!" Johanna whines. "I’m tired! Tell your stupid ocean to shut up!" Annie smiled good-naturedly in response.
"Okay. Ocean…shhh!" Annie says it seriously and Johanna laughs a small laugh before dozing off. Annie follows suit not much later, and for an unknown amount of time, the two girls just sit on the beach and sleep.
"Rue, can you believe it?" Prim looks ready to burst with eager anticipation over the event. "We go to high school next year!" Prim squeals at an octave Rue hasn’t heard since her youngest sister turned five.
"And we’re going to do it together, right?" Rue smiles at her best friend, already knowing the answer. Which, apparently, Prim knew, so the blonde girl scoffed.
"Of course." Prim answers happily, as she wraps her arms around the small African-American girl for a photo during their 8th grade graduation party.
